Summary:
Anna is not a typical teenage girl. She wasn't put on the world to live a full, happy, and successful life. She was born to save her older sister, Kate. Kate has had leukemia since she was a child, and Anna's job as a bone marrow match is to continuosly undergo surgeries, transfusions, and shots to keep her sister alive. Now, as a teenager, Anna questions her role in life, and makes a tough decision that tears her family apart. She decides to sue her parents for the rights of her own body after they ask her to donate a kidney for Kate. During this brutal journey, Anna's family faces diffucult decisions...and possibly fatal consequences.
Main Characters:
Anna Fitzgerald: 13 year old girl who sues her parents for medical emancipation. She is the loving sister of Kate Fitzgerald. Anna's parents ask (Anna believes it is more like force) her to donate a kidney to save Kate's life, once again. Anna is tired of being a donor and hires an attorney to represent her in suing her parents. We find out later in the story that the reason Anna sues her parens is different than everyone expected.
Kate Fitzgerald: The sister who has leukemia. She is tired of getting of getting all the attention in the hospital and wants to live a normal life. Her only friend is her sister, Anna.
Sara Fitzgerald: The mother of Kate, Anna, and Jesse. She loves all three of her children but tends to put most of her focus on Kate. It seems that she will do anything to save Kate's life, including endangering Anna's. A used-to-be lawyer, Sara decides to represent herself and her husband, Brian, in court.
Brian Fitzgerald: The father of Kate, Anna, and Jesse. He pays equal attention to all of them and in favor of letting Anna make her own decisions, even if it means for her to stop being a donor for Kate. He is a firefighter and has an intrest in astronomy. He named Anna after the constellation Andromeda.
Jesse Fitzgerald: Kate's older brother. He is the rebellious teen who always gets into trouble. Jesse sets fires, steals cars, and takes drugs. He sides and agrees with Anna's decisions because they both feel neglected by their parents.
Cambell Alexander: The attorney who is representing Anna in court. He has a service dog that no one knows the reason for becuase he continually makes excuses for. We later find out what it is for at the end of the book. He had a past relationshp with Julia.
Julia Romano: Anna's guardian ad litem for her trial. She had a past relationship with Cambell Alexander. Once they meet again, their love for eachother grows and they end up getting married in the epilogue.
